USAID Launches Program to Support CSOs for the Benefit of All Liberians

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) launched a new Civil Society Activity that will support stronger collaboration between civil society organizations (CSOs), the Government of Liberia, and local Liberians to advocate for citizen-driven reforms. Partnering with Naymote Partners for Democratic Development, the Center for Transparency and Accountability in Liberia (CENTAL), and Accountability Lab Liberia, the Civil Society Activity will seize opportunities for positive change through civil society advocacy on issues that Liberians themselves identify as priorities. Each year, Accountability Lab welcomes a new cohort of accountability entrepreneurs (or accountrapreneurs) to our global network of young passionate civic activists with great ideas for accountability and open government. In Uganda and Kenya, Accountability Lab supported selected accountapreneurs to refine their ideas for accountability and build sustainable ideas for strengthening their communities’ pandemic response and recovery with the support of the Ford Foundation.   After a year-long training process, these accountapreneurs came together in an open space on January 20, 2022, to share their ideas during a live pitching session.   First to pitch his idea was Martin Odongo from Uganda. A virtual Internship with Accountability Lab Nepal

Despite being 9,724 kilometres apart, I felt connected and part of the team every step of the way. As a student who knew little about humanitarian and development work, I was unsure what to expect working with Accountability Lab, let alone how to complete a virtual three-month internship from Sydney, Australia, due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. However, the moment I met with Narayan, Soni and Bikin, they eased all my concerns. They were so welcoming and excited to have me on the team. 14 weeks later, I completed my internship, and could not be happier and prouder of myself and [...]

Innovating within the civil service in Pakistan

By Zulfiqar Younus Developing public service capability, productivity and innovation is increasingly important to rebuild public trust in the government. To meet this challenge, it is essential to identify the skills, competencies, and leadership styles required of civil services for an innovation-ready public service. Civil servants in senior administrative positions are expected to work across organizational precincts and jurisdictions to design and implement innovative initiatives to address emergent policy challenges and improve the impact of public service delivery. They need to balance conflicting objectives, motivate, inspire and lead their workforce. Civil service leaders are also needed to act diligently to [...]

Community and Communication in a Covid-19 Internship

By Marlee Moore  Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, my summer as an intern at the Accountability Lab occurred remotely. In the midst of the pandemic, there were unconventional challenges and experiences for a typical summer internship. Despite the pandemic and working remotely for the Lab, I however developed a sense of belonging within my team and learned from my peers. The Lab managed to do a brilliant job in the face of these circumstances, offering resources, support, and opportunities to ensure this internship remained a positive experience for me. However, that does not mean that the internship did not entail [...]

“If it doesn’t work the first time, you can always try again”

Written by Opeyemi Omiwale When I discovered Accountability Lab, I was fascinated by the work they were doing. As an international student from Nigeria studying Economics in the United States, I was always interested in corruption and its impact on the economies of developing countries. One of the things that always bugged me was not knowing how to tackle the issues of corruption in developing countries practically.  As I read about Accountability Lab, I knew then that I wanted to work there. After graduating with my undergraduate degree in Economics and Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Superior, I applied [...]

COVID-19 and the invisible divide of digital outreach regarding government services for the vulnerable population

Written by Momina Sahar While one of the most promising and appealing steps taken by the government of Pakistan was the digitization of government services during the unprecedented times of a global pandemic, the uncritical embrace of technology for dissemination of information and services along with the lack of availability of digital services in certain areas of Pakistan creates a hierarchy in terms of access to information. Disparate access to the internet is a multilateral issue, the causes for which stem from various reasons such as infrastructure unavailability, gender disparity, and the economic and digital literacy divide.  As pointed out [...]
