Community and Communication in a Covid-19 Internship

By Marlee Moore  Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, my summer as an intern at the Accountability Lab occurred remotely. In the midst of the pandemic, there were unconventional challenges and experiences for a typical summer internship. Despite the pandemic and working remotely for the Lab, I however developed a sense of belonging within my team and learned from my peers. The Lab managed to do a brilliant job in the face of these circumstances, offering resources, support, and opportunities to ensure this internship remained a positive experience for me. However, that does not mean that the internship did not entail [...]

“If it doesn’t work the first time, you can always try again”

Written by Opeyemi Omiwale When I discovered Accountability Lab, I was fascinated by the work they were doing. As an international student from Nigeria studying Economics in the United States, I was always interested in corruption and its impact on the economies of developing countries. One of the things that always bugged me was not knowing how to tackle the issues of corruption in developing countries practically.  As I read about Accountability Lab, I knew then that I wanted to work there. After graduating with my undergraduate degree in Economics and Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin-Superior, I applied [...]

COVID-19 and the invisible divide of digital outreach regarding government services for the vulnerable population

Written by Momina Sahar While one of the most promising and appealing steps taken by the government of Pakistan was the digitization of government services during the unprecedented times of a global pandemic, the uncritical embrace of technology for dissemination of information and services along with the lack of availability of digital services in certain areas of Pakistan creates a hierarchy in terms of access to information. Disparate access to the internet is a multilateral issue, the causes for which stem from various reasons such as infrastructure unavailability, gender disparity, and the economic and digital literacy divide.  As pointed out [...]

How the digital divide is affecting education for students away from urban settings

Written by Mehru Ahmed The advent of online schooling and E-learning during the COVID-19 pandemic In these times of the COVID-19 pandemic, many aspects of our lives have shifted from reality to virtual mediums. While most of these transitions were successful, one, in particular, lagged behind tremendously, that of the education sector, which faces great challenges, especially in Pakistan.  The initial suggestion for in-person schooling to be substituted with online school or e-Learning was proposed in 2020, during the first wave of the Coronavirus. Since the COVID-19 pandemic was an unexpected reality, people and governments were not ready to cope [...]

The Language of Accountability in Pakistan

By Fayyaz Yaseen Almost all the words referring to accountability in one way or another – such as responsiveness, transparency, participation, inclusion, accountability, rule of law – are used just as they are (as English words), despite the fact that there are stronger Urdu corresponding words that can spell out an even stronger meaning that also relates to the local context. For example, the Urdu word for ‘responsiveness’ is ‘jawabdahi’, which means that one is not only expected to respond in a timely manner but is also accountable for doing/not doing so. Similarly, the term ‘rule of law’ is understood [...]

Rethinking the Pink Economy in Pakistan

Saro Imran is a transgender rights activist and accountapreneur who believes that economic independence is the key to ending violence against transgender people in Pakistan. She always considered her gender as a vital part of her identity and struggled with the notion of hiding it to gain societal acceptance. This struggle became a thing of the past when she first gained economic independence. That step allowed her to confidently embrace her identity as a transgender person. The confusion she felt since her childhood began to abate and instead of fighting internally against her gender identity, she began to focus outwards [...]

Understanding Translocal Networks – Blair Glencorse at SSIR Frontiers of Social Innovation

By Blair Glencorse Seven years ago, during the Ebola crisis in West Africa, I spent a lot of time working with our small team in Liberia around the accountability of the response- and I remember vividly as the severity of the crisis took hold and the international community descended on Monrovia, the capital city. There were many good people as part of that effort, but there were also the most stark disparities- and one memory in particular stands out for me. One evening I walked past the biggest hotel in the city while various health delegations were drinking cocktails and [...]
