Who we are
Accountability Lab began almost 15 years ago as an effort to support local change-makers within specific communities to develop creative ideas around governance issues. We have grown into a global translocal network of Labs that is supporting an ecosystem for accountability around the world.
Timeline
Our journey through the years
2012
Accountability Lab is founded in Nepal and registered in Kathmandu and Washington DC. Our Accountability Incubator to support the capacity and growth of local civic activists launches in Nepal.

2013
Accountability Lab Liberia is registered in Monrovia and launches a second Accountability Incubator.

2014
Integrity Icon launches in Nepal (called Integrity Idol at the time), attracting support for naming and faming exemplary public servants.

2015
Mobile Citizen Helpdesks (now Civic Action Teams) begin their work reconstituting public information services in Nepal after devastating earthquakes. Integrity Icon Liberia begins.

2016
Accountability Lab Mali and Accountability Lab Pakistan are registered with two more Integrity Icon campaigns. Our Incubator begins in Liberia and Pakistan.

2017
Accountability Lab Nigeria launches an Integrity Icon campaign in Abuja. AL Liberia launches Civic Action Teams (CivActs) - an innovative development project that allows for the co-creation of governance solutions and mechanisms between the public and powerholders..

2018
Accountability Lab South Africa is registered and Integrity Icon is launched in South Africa and Sri Lanka. The Incubator launches in Nigeria and Mali. Accountability Lab Niger is registered.

2019
CivActs launches in Pakistan with health and justice as core priorities. Accountability Lab Mexico is registered, along with Integrity Icon Mexico. Our Integrity Innovation Lab begins - a project that builds capacity and accountable leadership within government or private sector departments.

2020
Accountability Lab is registered in Zimbabwe and Integrity Icon launches in Philadelphia and Niger. The Incubator launches in Kenya and Uganda. CivActs launches in Nigeria. The Lab begins its Coronavirus Bulletin campaign to combat myths and misinformation during the pandemic.

2021
The Gov-Her-Nance project in launched, to elevate issues of equality and equity in local government. Accountability Lab is registered in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Integrity Icon launches in Somaliland and Zimbabwe.

2022
AL begins work in Belize on an Accountability Incubator and Integrity Innovation Lab. We launch HackCorruption globally, a program to unearth and support new tech tools to fight graft. AL Nepal introduces our inaugural Climate Fellowship.

2023
AL Mali, AL Zimbabwe and AL South Africa release new conscious music albums under Voice2Rep - an arts4change program that supports the creation of music as a tool to encourage better governance. EPs this year tackled issues like gender-based violence and data privacy concerns. AL sets up a partnership with the Manusher Jonno Foundation to strengthen youth engagement in democracy in Bangladesh and Nepal.

2024
Our HackCorruption campaign takes the fight against corruption global with hackathons in Latin America, Southeast Asia and the Balkans.

2025
We launch a new network lab, Accountability Lab East and Southern Africa. AL kicks off the Data for Collective Action project to track funding flows. AL, Development Gateway and Digital Public get a new partnerships and mergers advisory service off the ground called Civic Strength Partners.
