Yuguelito: Housing, Self-Governance & Accountability

Access to decent housing is emerging as one of Mexico's significant global challenges. This is especially true after the COVID-19 pandemic, which saw increased speculation and a wave of global north digital nomads that favored the country's urban centers. However, the housing crisis is not a new issue. In Mexico, housing is deemed a private investment opportunity and not a right. Existing public policies aren’t focused on providing housing, but instead, they’re focused on favoring the real estate market. While it is true that decades ago, large social housing projects were put in place, and public policies focused on granting [...]

What’s democracy without citizen participation?

This article presented by Grocott's Mail discusses the ongoing challenges in achieving meaningful citizen participation and accountability within South Africa's local municipalities, focusing on the case study of Makhanda. It highlights initiatives like the Action for Accountability project and the role of organizations like the Public Service Accountability Monitor in promoting civic engagement and addressing governance issues. It has been three decades since the dawn of democracy in South Africa, yet gaps between communities and government remain a talking point. The apartheid administration brought the blatant exclusive participation in governance, forcefully silencing a large portion of the population. However, the [...]

The Proverb “It Takes a Village” Never Gets Old

Joining Accountability Lab in the United States while enrolled as a South African master's student has been extremely rewarding. The day I received my offer letter to be the Global Programs and Partnerships Fellow, I was elated yet nervous. Still a student at the Austin W. Marxe School of Public and International Affairs at Baruch College, moving to another new city in the fall of 2022 seemed like a big decision. But I was comforted by the idea of working in an organization that values integrity, collaboration, humility, and innovation. I was also happy to work with diverse and inclusive [...]

10 Key Learnings from A Decade of Building Accountability in Nepal

Our team at Accountability Lab Nepal are celebrating the organization’s 10th anniversary by reflecting on some of our key learnings. We feel that our greatest impact is in how much we learn and how much our learning culture has helped us to catalyze changes in Nepal by influencing decisions, shaping opinions and role modeling behaviors. We’ve tested creative ideas as we have mobilized around accountability issues through campaigns; equipped reformers within and outside government with skills, knowledge and tools to push for better governance; and influenced policies, process and practices by building ecosystems in communities. Despite challenges in the past [...]

Business integrity during COVID-19: How to build integrity and trust within businesses during pandemic?

By Bakhtawar Khalid In the light of recent hoarding and price manipulation scandals, the business industry has developed a reputation for its lack of ethics. In an industry where getting ahead and making money appears to take precedence over ethical decision-making, it can be difficult to understand the importance of ethical behavior in business. Lack of business ethics and commitment to compliance leads to a wealth of problems for a business; for instance, they can face: Fines and long-drawn legal battles; Criminal charges against those involved; Negative effects on employee motivation may create an air of distrust among employees and tension [...]

We need to talk about Racial Inequity: Advice for convening difficult conversations

By Cheri-Leigh Erasmus As renewed protests around racial equity continue in the USA, and all over the world, the development sector finds itself taking stock of its own practices and how organizations and practitioners may perpetuate unequal systems through their work. Through an ongoing Learning Exchange made possible by OSF’s Economic Justice Program, a group of team members from Accountability Lab and the ONECampaign have recognized this as an important learning moment that challenges organizations to engage in difficult conversations and, more importantly, take action. Although this work on racial equity was not initially part of the exchange, the moment [...]
