We’ve wrapped our fourth regional #HackCorruption event in Malaysia and are excited to introduce our winning teams. Participants in Kuala Lumpur pitched prototypes ranging from reforming procurement processes to helping citizens monitor climate finance. In April, we’ll head to Jakarta, Indonesia, for a boot camp where the teams will build out these prototypes. The winning teams from HackCorruption Malaysia include OpenBO, Voices4Budget, Carbonitor, Integrity Eyes, and Land Looters.

The program, supported by the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement at the U.S. Department of State and the USAID Countering Transnational Corruption Grand Challenge for Development, aims to support talented individuals from civic tech, CSO, and activist backgrounds. The Malaysian regional hackathon brought together change-makers from Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand to collaborate and innovate. The Lab is implementing HackCorruption in partnership with the Center for International Private Enterprise and Development Gateway: An Irex Venture. Read about our winning teams below.

Open BO

1. OpenBO (Transnational) : A platform that gives information to procurement officers, civil society, law enforcers, and the government to find persons/companies that already have verdicts from criminal offenses in the area of corruption, bribery, fraud, and environmental issues, data from blacklist tender, and international sanctions.

#Voices4Budget

2.#Voices4Budget: A platform aimed at opening up data regarding village funds, with the goal of increasing awareness within the village community about how budget allocations are monitored.

Integrity Eyes

4.Integrity Eyes (Transnational): The project aims to combat corruption in the construction and infrastructure sectors by addressing fund leakages, cost overruns, project delays, and cartel influences in contractor appointments. It focuses on enhancing transparency, accountability, and fair competition through comprehensive procurement and project management reforms. By advocating for merit-based contractor selection and stringent oversight, the initiative seeks to eliminate corruption’s root causes, ensuring projects are completed efficiently and ethically.

Land Looters

5.Land Looters: A microsite with interactive ‘land grabbing’ case studies and comprehensive resources in Indonesia and Thailand. It will also include a map that details official court documents and data from NGOs to illustrate its prevalence, and can be filtered by several key indicators such as “company ownership”, “location” and “type of land acquisition”.
