Women changing the world through film

By Zeina Walet I am Zeinabou Walet Mohamed Ali, a young woman with a passion for women's empowerment and youth leadership, which I explore in the different communities I work with in Mali. Originally from the region of Timbuktu, I have been immersed in the realities and needs of these communities as I traveled all over the country. My journeys have taken me all the way up to the refugee camp of Mberra in Mauritania, and I have been aware of the challenges faced by these populations since my youth. Among these is the lack of women's participation in democratic [...]

The Proverb “It Takes a Village” Never Gets Old

Joining Accountability Lab in the United States while enrolled as a South African master's student has been extremely rewarding. The day I received my offer letter to be the Global Programs and Partnerships Fellow, I was elated yet nervous. Still a student at the Austin W. Marxe School of Public and International Affairs at Baruch College, moving to another new city in the fall of 2022 seemed like a big decision. But I was comforted by the idea of working in an organization that values integrity, collaboration, humility, and innovation. I was also happy to work with diverse and inclusive [...]

SA’s passionate and inspirational public servants honoured, with policeman taking top award

By Zukiswa Pikoli The Integrity Icons awards present an alternative to the perception that public servants are corrupt and lazy, and showcase that there are some who ‘go the extra mile’ The Accountability Lab has been running the Integrity Icons awards since 2018. The awards showcase the excellent work done by many men and women in the public service, something that Accountability Lab’s country director for SA, Sekoetlane Phamodi, says often goes unnoticed. Low compliance with FOI, public procurement laws responsible for high corruption in public sector – CSOs

A coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) has said that corruption in the public sector will continue to rise due to a lack of transparency in the public procurement laws and providing the public with little or no information regarding contracts being awarded by elected and appointed officials of governments. The coalition decried that despite the enactment of the Public Procurement Act 2007 and the Freedom of Information Act 2011, corruption has geometrically increased in the public sector due to a lack of implementation. It regretted that the laws which were put in place to monitor projects and hold government [...]
