Mali’s Youth Take the Lead on Inclusive Education Advocacy

By Zeinabou Walet Mohamed Ali In Mali, critical issues such as insecurity and climate change are hampering the successful implementation of educational strategies. Socio-cultural constraints are leading to a depressingly low level of girls' education, as demonstrated by a 2018 UNESCO study which highlighted that only 37% of girls were enrolled in secondary school compared to 44% of boys. As a result, only a third of women are able to decipher a simple sentence, compared with 80% of men. I recently had the opportunity to participate in a consultative day with young leaders involved in educational issues in Mali aimed [...]

Lessons Learned During the S4D’s First Year of Action

By Kibo Ngowi Supporting accountable institutions in all the places we work across the globe is a central aspect of Accountability Lab’s mission. It’s work that has become more critical as democracy and human rights continue to come under threat in multiple regions. Consolidating support for the transgender community

Written by Tirelo Makwela In May 2018, the Pakistan government passed the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, a comprehensive response to ensure the rights and welfare of the trans community are protected. It was hailed as a win for the transgender community but experience has shown that the law alone is not enough to ensure the safety and prosperity of transgender people. Many still face harassment, exclusion and violence in public spaces, even when trying to access government services. According to a report by the Guardian, 2021 was the deadliest year for the trans community, with more than 300 [...]

My work has taught me how important it is to listen to the stories of transgender people and other marginalized individuals if we are to address these challenges. One important task is to create knowledge about these issues [...]

Written by Upenyu Makoni-Muchemwa People living with disabilities (PLWDs) face multiple and complex challenges in Zimbabwe. As well as the challenges unique to their disability, people living with disabilities also face social and structural exclusion leading to negative stereotyping and stigmatisation and are less likely to participate in most social activities and governance processes. The same challenges also affect people from ethnic minorities that have been marginalised from State-led development for many years. At the nexus of these challenges is 2020 Voice2Rep Zimbabwe Finalist Marvellous Tshuma, stage name Marve Tee, a young woman from Binga, and a member of the [...]
