Catching People “Doing the Right Thing” in Mexico with the Bosch Alumni Network!

A few years ago, the Accountability Lab began a campaign called Integrity Icon. We were fed up with the constant stream of bad news around issues of corruption- that endlessly focused on the problem and the wrong-doers, without offering any solutions. Integrity Icon flips that narrative- by “naming and faming” honest government officials and celebrating them very publicly in a way that can lift up these role-models, rebuild trust and give citizens hope for a better future. The campaign has led to some fantastic results around the world- the public credibility that it provides along with the Lab’s ongoing guidance has allowed the [...]

“Integrity is a team effort”

“Integrity is a team effort, not just the work of a single person” ~Kajiman Rai, Integrity Icon 2019 It takes more than one person to promote, maintain and preserve integrity. Sometimes you have to go above your TOR, and if your team is not ready to work with you, it gets difficult to walk this path alone. Kajiman Rai, an Integrity Icon from Nepal for 2019, took the initiative to lead the summit with his own principles on what it takes to walk on the path of integrity. His strong words became the root that generated debate around how to [...]

Flipping the Corruption Narrative in Pakistan

Transparency and accountability have been a key policy pillar of the PTI government since it came to power last year - for well-known reasons. The stories about corruption overwhelm us - from high-level cases against politicians, to graft within the police, to wrong-doing in colleges. Every day there are alarmist pieces about the impact that a widespread lack of transparency is having upon our society. There is no doubt that corruption is a significant problem, but this narrative is not helpful because it saps the hope needed to support reforms. And the central lesson from around the world on these [...]

Disinformation, Fake News and Integrity Icon

The world was a different place when we launched our Integrity Icon campaign five years ago. If we think of changes in everything from political leadership to cultural or social trends - the things we were supporting, reading or listening to in 2014 are probably not the same today. Integrity Icon was even known as Integrity Idol - and functioned in a different space.  These trends have been top-of-mind for us due to recent incidents that have tested the Lab’s processes. By Global Communications Director Sheena Adams   The Integrity Icon campaign begins with public nominations early in the year and [...]

Driving positive narratives about change and accountability

The world over, a lack of accountability is undermining fair, equal societies; the most marginalised voices are not heard in critical conversations and leaders are not held responsible for their decisions. This in turn means people in power are not held to account or answerable for the use of that power. Accountability is critical as it ensures that governments and other service providers deliver on their responsibilities by responding to citizens’ demands in an evidence-informed way. This should ultimately lead to effective governance and the development of trust between people and power-holders. Stan Getui of Luminate explains why the group [...]

Decapitalizing the ‘F’ in filmmaker…

Documentaries can generate some of the most enriching experiences in any form of filmmaking. You wrap your hands around a camera and the world opens in front of you to be recorded, beautified, chiselled and then seen and interrogated by various pairs of curious new eyes. Tsogo Kupa takes a closer look at the impact of documentary filmmaking It’s easy to be seduced by the camera; to wilfully turn a blind side to ethics because you feel, as the filmmaker, that a certain shot needs to be in your film, because that’s your ultimate priority: a film. So, as blasphemous [...]
