About the Role
We are looking for a Junior Communications Specialist with a particular interest in social media and website maintenance to join our 3-person communications team based in Johannesburg.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone early in their career who is curious about the international development space, eager to learn, and ready to take initiative. You’ll be an all-rounder who’s happy to roll up your sleeves and support communications efforts across multiple countries and time zones.
There’s plenty of room to grow in this role as you gain hands-on experience in global nonprofit communications.
Key Responsibilities
Social Media & Digital Content
- Draft and schedule engaging content for AL’s social media channels (Twitter/X, Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook)
- Support live-tweeting and social media coverage of events and campaigns
- Create simple graphics using Canva or similar tools
- Track performance metrics and assist in reporting
Website Maintenance
- Update and maintain content on the website (WordPress)
- Monitor website functionality and flag technical issues
- Help optimize pages for accessibility, SEO, and user experience
Content Support
- Assist in drafting blog posts, newsletters, and case studies
- Conduct basic research and fact-checking
- Organize photo, video, and design assets for campaigns
Team Support & Coordination
- Assist in planning and executing communications campaigns
- Join regular team calls with staff in multiple time zones
- Support internal documentation and digital file management
About You
You don’t need tons of experience — we’re more interested in your curiosity, creativity, and willingness to learn.
You Have:
- Exceptional coordination and time management skills
- Keen attention to detail in contributing to a well-organized and accessible information system
- A strong interest in communications, media, or digital storytelling
- Experience with social media platforms and tools (personal or professional)
- Familiarity with WordPress or a willingness to learn
- Strong English writing and editing skills
- Basic design sense and experience with Canva (or similar)
- Interest in governance, social justice, or international development
- Experience working with nonprofits or grassroots campaigns
- Multilingual ability (especially French or Urdu) will be an advantage
