On April 14^th, 2014, over 200 Nigerian schoolgirls were abducted from their Chibok boarding school by members of Boko Haram. One woman, Hadiza Usman, spearheaded the Bring Back Our Girls initiative and has worked tirelessly since to secure the release of the girls. In Colombia, over 4 million people have been forced off their land, leaving their country with a severe internal refugee crisis. “The Fight for Land” directed by Juan Mejia shed light on this relatively unknown issue with creative and powerful storytelling.

These are just two of the winners of Honesty Oscars in 2016. Every year actors, actresses, musicians and other entertainers receive recognition for their work through dozens of awards shows, but what about those whose art and activism seek to hold governments and corporations accountable? Honesty Oscars began in 2012 as an initiative by the Accountability Lab and ONE to celebrate the stars of transparency and accountability around the world. These are the celebrities who are changing the world. We want to both honor their work and bringing attention to the issues they address.

The categories this year are Best Female Activist, Best Male Activist, Best Picture, Best Activist Anthem, and Best Photograph. Nominations opened December 1^st and will remain open until January 15^th. Once nominations have closed, our panel of judges will select the best candidates for each category. Winners will be announced by February and contacted for a virtual awards ceremony.
