Announcing 2016 Positions in Nepal, Liberia and Pakistan

The Accountability Lab and the Newhouse Center for Global Engagement have partnered to create opportunities for visual storytelling and communication students to work in Liberia, Nepal and Pakistan. As a part of that collaboration we are announcing the Summer 2016 Visual Storytelling and Communications Fellowship positions.

In Liberia, Nepal and Pakistan, the Accountability Lab supports a variety of innovative programs, with a strong focus on the arts – music, film, media, etc. While fellows will have the chance to engage in work across the Accountability Lab’s portfolio, it is anticipated that support for the Accountability Lab’s Film Schools and the Integrity Idol campaigns will constitute majority of the residents’ work.

The Essentials:

• Four in-country Visual Storytelling Fellowships available: two in Liberia, one in Nepal, one in Pakistan
  • 10-12 week fellowships
  • Starting Summer 2016
• One year-long in-country Communications Fellowship available in Nepal
  • 1 year fellowship based in Kathmandu
  • Starting March 2016
• Basic in-country expenses paid
• Students from all schools and recent graduates are eligible to apply
• Deadline to apply is March 13, 2016. Positions will be filled on a rolling-basis.

Summer Visual Storytelling Fellows in Nepal, Liberia and Pakistan

The Accountability Lab is recruiting visual storytelling experts for summer positions in Monrovia, Liberia; Kathmandu, Nepal; and Islamabad, Pakistan. The position will be a 10-12 week residency for the period May to August 2016 to assist staff with the following tasks:

• Development and production of accountability film schools;
• Support for program management and implementation, and the development of systems (particularly relating to multi-media infrastructure);
• Writing and editing assistance for a variety of outputs; primarily curriculum and scripts for the accountability film schools
• Lead production support for the Integrity Idol campaigns
• Building and maintaining relationships with Lab partners and key organizations and individuals working on accountability issues;
• Collaboration with the Lab’s communication team to market the Lab’s electronic media presence internationally;
• Training staff and partners on production and post-production skills;
• Other tasks as required.

Qualifications

The Accountability Lab is a young organization with limited resources so the fellow will need to be highly adaptable, self-motivated and able to multi-task. Beyond this, candidates for the position should demonstrate the following qualifications:

• Fluency in English with excellent research, writing and editing skills;
• Excellent organizational and multi-media skills, especially editing and production of film/video;
• A graduate student, advanced undergraduate student, or recent graduate in a visual communication field of study;
• An understanding of accountability issues on a local, national and global level;
• Work experience with a particular focus on international development, governance, institutional reform and social change;
• Demonstrated ability to build networks and conduct outreach around development issues both on the ground and online;
• Experience designing and administering a variety of multi-media platforms.

Ideally, candidates should also be able to indicate that they possess some of the following:

• An ability to work independently and within a small, flexible but rapidly evolving organization;
• Previous relevant internship or working experience;
• Superb relationship-building and management skills;
• Photography and audio skills;
• Previous experience abroad (Africa/South Asia preferred).

Fellows must be available for a minimum of eight weeks with longer durations preferred.

Remuneration

These fellowships present an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on, field-level experience helping a dynamic and innovative nonprofit grow on the ground. While our funds are limited, the Lab will cover work-related travel and accommodation costs and provide a modest stipend for food expenses. However, the fellows will need to mobilize additional financing to support costs such as air travel to the country location.

The Accountability Lab Communications Fellowship

The Accountability Lab is recruiting a communications fellow for Kathmandu, Nepal (to also cover Pakistan and support the larger communications work of the Lab) to begin in March 2016. Tasks and responsibilities will include:

• Support for Accountability Lab’s communications including design, social media, blog, photography, and other outreach activities;
• Support for communications management and implementation, and assist in the development of systems (particularly relating to multi-media infrastructure);
• Writing and editing assistance for a variety of outputs including blogs, op-eds, websites and other outreach materials;
• Communications support for ongoing campaigns including Integrity Idol;
• Support for documentation of daily projects, events and outreach through photography in particular;
• Building and maintaining relationships with Lab partners and key organizations and individuals working on accountability issues;
• Training staff and partners on communications and outreach;
• Other tasks as required.

Qualifications

The Accountability Lab is a young organization with limited resources so the fellow will need to be highly adaptable, self-motivated and able to multi-task. Beyond this, candidates for the position should be able to demonstrate the following:

• Experience with a variety of multi-media platforms.

• Residents must be available for a minimum of three months with a year preferred.

Remuneration

This fellowship presents an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on, ground-level experience helping a dynamic and innovative nonprofit grow. The Lab will cover work related travel and accommodation costs and provide a modest stipend that will cover food expenses (totaling $20,000 for the year).
