Terms of Reference: Nonprofit Management Fellow
The Accountability Lab is building a new generation of active citizens and responsible leaders around the world. We support changemakers to develop and implement positive ideas for integrity in their communities, unleashing positive social and economic change.
As part of the Accountability Lab’s efforts to play a role in shaping the next generation of young nonprofit leaders in South Africa, the Lab is supporting a one year, fully immersive, accountability focused nonprofit management fellowship. Fellows are given the opportunity to participate in every aspect of managing a non-profit under the guidance of a senior staff member. The program includes: project management, partnership building and stakeholder relations; research, MEL and communications.
Accountability Lab South Africa (AL SA) seeks to appoint one Nonprofit Management Fellow to be based in Johannesburg, South Africa. The 2021 Fellowship will primarily focus on supporting implementation of our flagship Integrity Icon Campaign and other projects as assigned.
Fellowship duration : 12-months
Reports to : Country Director for South Africa
Remuneration : A competitive monthly stipend
Requirements : Recent University Graduate with a passion for social justice and up to 3 years workplace experience.
Fellows may come from any discipline or background with the intention of learning what it takes to work in- and manage a nonprofit or developing a specific set of skills which supports the work of civil society. We are looking for curious and ambitious self-starters; problem solvers with a can-do attitude and a learning mindset. A basic requirement for this Fellowship is that you have good computer skills. A sound working knowledge of Microsoft Office and comfort with the Google suite of online tools are must-haves, and familiarity working with design, publishing and multimedia editing tools such as Canva and Adobe Creative Cloud’s suite of apps are a plus!
Although some work-place experience is ideal, this is not an essential requirement. We believe that skills can be developed on-the-go through our structured learning program, but a demonstrable commitment to our values and sharing our enthusiasm for working in civil society and with social movements is essential for success in this role.

About the role and responsibilities
- Work with the Country Director, other staff and partners in implementing projects as assigned.
- Maintain our relationships with key stakeholders in South Africa including through regular updates, dissemination of information and collateral.
- Administration and Finances
- Assist with meeting and process documentation as well as records management, including supporting the documentation of organisational growth and development processes.
- Assist with tracking revenue and expenses against assigned budgets, monitoring cash flow, forecasting costs, and expense reporting.
- Support the implementation of AL SA’s internal communications and external engagement strategy.
- Coordinating and leveraging compelling story telling to communicate the impact of AL SA activities, projects and programmes.
- Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning
- Work with the AL SA team to gather case studies, quotes, impact statistics, and lessons learned from participants and beneficiaries of AL SA activities, projects and programmes.
- Support in the analysis of monitoring data and preparation of outcome and impact reports.
- Support the development of MEL plans as assigned.
